What is watch and wait (active surveillance)?

You may be told that your cancer does not need to be treated immediately or may never need treatment. For example, some blood cancers, and low-grade prostate cancers.

You will still have regular check-ups, blood tests and monitoring to see if there have been any changes – this is called 'watch and wait' or 'active surveillance'.

What watch and wait or active surveillance means for you will be specific to your individual circumstances and diagnosis. Speak to your cancer nurse specialist to understand what watch and wait looks like for you.

If changes are found as part of your regular monitoring, then your healthcare team will discuss next steps and treatment options with you.
